Ordinariamente não se preocupa o viticultor com a altura a que deve ser feita a enxertia. O estado de desenvolvimento dos cavalos americanos é o único regulador desta importantíssima operação cultural. Daí provém que a maior parte dos enxertos ficam ligados em plano inferior à superfície do terreno em que a plantação foi feita. Deste facto deriva a sucessiva formação das raízes dos garfos e, quando não sejam postos em prática os necessários cuidados no corte dessas raízes, é daí consequente a morte dos cavalos americanos, ficando as videiras nacionais constituindo cepas de pé franco e, portanto, sujeitas aos estragos da invasão filoxérica. Não há muitos dias ainda que numa propriedade, onde fizemos um reconhecimento filoxérico, encontramos enxertos sobre videiras americanas, em completa decadência pelos estragos desta doença, feitos nas raízes dos garfos, únicas que estavam servindo à sustentação dessas plantas.
