O comércio teve de lutar com o preço exagerado do género; viu-se sem os elementos indispensáveis para as suas transacções habituais, e, o que se tornou ainda mais grave, teve de abastecer-se com vinhos de qualidades baixas, sendo até alguns insusceptíveis de ser beneficiados e entregues ao consumo. É indispensável procurar no ano agrícola, em que nos achamos, combater esta enfermidade por todos os modos, e felizmente há recursos para isso, cuja eficácia provou uma experiencia seguida durante anos, em vinhedos, que foram primeiro visitados por essa calamidade. Quaisquer que sejam os inconvenientes, que advenham do tratamento das videiras pelo sulfato de cobre, são eles incomparavelmente inferiores aos que resultariam, de se abandonarem as vinhas aos funestos estragos do «míldio». Os inconvenientes a que aludimos, resultantes do tratamento, devem desaparecer havendo a devida cautela no modo de empregá-lo e principalmente evitando-se os tratamentos tardios. Recomenda-lhes mais, aos encarregados da compra de vinhos para a Companhia, que façam constar a todos os lavradores, fregueses da Companhia, e mesmo aos que o não são, que a Direcção não comprará, da futura colheita, vinho que resulte de uvas afectadas pelo míldio. A Direcção exigirá que se lhe prove que o tratamento foi feito e que as uvas estavam limpas da doença. Esta regra só terá excepção quanto às comarcas vinhateiras que não forem acometidas pelo parasita, e por isso não precisaram de combatê-lo. É preciso que eles (os lavradores) saibam que os ataques repetidos do «míldio» destroem as videiras, e enquanto o não conseguem por completo, enfraquecem a produção do vinho, e este mesmo é tão Inferior, que os compradores hão-de rejeitá-lo. Especialmente esta Real Companhia Vinícola, que tanto tem tomado a peito apresentar aos consumidores vinhos naturais, preparados com o maior cuidado, para torná-los saudáveis e de gosto agradável, não poderá abastecer-se em adegas, onde se recolham vinhos atacados de uma moléstia que que lhes debilita todas as qualidades que os tornam apreciáveis.
