Infelizmente, a experiência veio bem depressa modificar a primeira maneira de ver sobre o assunto; e por tal forma que nas regiões antigamente replantadas, os produtores diretos têm desaparecido pouco a pouco para dar lugar às castas europeias enxertadas sobre pé americano.\r\nQuais as causas deste facto, tão evidente para todos aqueles que seguiram, desde o começo, tudo que tenha relação com o emprego de castas americanas? São de duas ordens: 1ª – constante inferioridade das castas americanas quanto à produção de vinho; 2º - insuficiência da resistência ao filoxera daquelas castas que dão melhores resultados sobre o ponto de vista da qualidade e quantidade dos frutos.\r\n\r\nNão é impossível conceber teoricamente um cruzamento que acumule a resistência ao filoxera das vinhas americanas com as qualidades próprias das castas europeias, mas a verdade é que há maiores probabilidades para que esse cruzamento se não possa realizar.
