É uma luta a que ano pode esquivar-se de modo algum.\r\nTorna-se presentemente supérfluo dizer que os sais de cobre são os que mais economicamente preservam a vinha dos ataques do míldio. É isso mais que sabido.\r\n\r\nEm todo o caso, para se conseguir o resultado desejado, é necessário que o viticultor aplique o tratamento, tendo sempre em consideração o modo de propagação dos parasitas,\r\n\r\nO míldio e o black-rot da vinha, bem como fitóftora da batata e do tomateiro, desenvolvem-se por meio de ataques sucessivos denominados «invasões».\r\n\r\nEstes parasitas permanecem localizados em diversos pontos dos órgãos verdes, produzindo manchas.\r\n\r\nTem diversas fases a marcha de cada invasão:\r\n\r\n1º Quando o tempo corre húmido, as semente ou sporos dos parasitas vegetais começam a germinar.\r\n\r\n2º O sporo germinado emite um filamento que pentra nos tecidos verdes, dando lugar ao contágio.\r\n\r\n3º Durante algum tempo que varia entre 10 a 22 dias, segundo a temperatura, os filamentos ramificam-se no órgão invadido, nutrindo à sua custa. É o período da incubação.\r\n\r\n4º No fim deste período, os estragos tornam-se visíveis, aparecendo as manhas.\r\n\r\n5º Sobre estas manchas o parasita produz novas sementes ou sporos, isto é, entra na frutificação. \r\n\r\nQuando o filamento do parasita entrou um pouco profundamente nos tecidos da planta, evidentemente já é tarde para se aplicar o tratamento pois para o destruir seria necessário destruir os tecidos que o envolve.\r\n\r\nCom mais razão se torna tardia a sulfatagem neste momento, pode destruir os sporos novos, mas não salva os órgãos contaminados.\r\n\r\nQuando se faz a sulfatagem muito antes do começo de uma invasão, como não se ignora, entre a época da sulfatagem e da germinação dos sporos, desenvolvem-se novas folhas que não foram pulverizadas e ficam expostas aos ataques das criptogâmicas parasitárias.\r\n\r\nPor outra e mais genericamente: é forçoso sulfatar durante ou logo em seguida a um período húmido, proveniente de orvalhos fortes, chuvas, nevoeiros e trovoadas repetidas.\r\n\r\nÉ preciso notar que o míldio da vinha e o míldio da batata exigem, para se desenvolverem mais calor que o black rot. \r\nEste último chega muitas vezes a aparecer em Maio, enquanto que os outros só em Junho começam a fazer os seus estragos.\r\n\r\nA formação das manchas do míldio da batata faz-se rapidamente, bastando uma semana para que um campo completo apareça todo queimado.\r\n\r\nA sulfatagem preventiva é a que a ciência agronómica justificadamente recomenda e a que em geral se pratica.
