Pedro de Castro Pinto Bravo, publicado no Portugal Agrícola, transcrevemos o seguinte, por nos parecer de interesse para os viticultores:\r\n«A calda bordalesa bem preparada, e bem aplicada, é até hoje o melhor preventivo contra o míldio; porém, infelizmente há muitos viticultores que sofrem deceções, por não saberem proceder, como tenho já visto.\r\nNão é indiferente a ordem de se juntarem os componentes da calda, nem se podem fixar antecipadamente as percentagens.\r\nA calda deve ser preparada como se segue:\r\nEm uma vasilha de madeira, barro ou de pedra deitam-se 80 litros de água. Em uma vasilha à parte, dissolvem-se 2 kilogramas de sulfato de cobre, em 10 litros de água; em uma outra vasilha, contendo 10 litros de água, deitam-se 3 kilogramas de cal gorda em pedra (nunca em pó) com que de faz pasta de cal. Em seguida junta-se a dissolução do sulfato aos 80 litros de água, e nesta mistura deita-se a pasta de cal, a pouco e pouco, mexendo sempre, até que uma tira vermelha de papel de tornesol se torne azul; logo que isto sucede, suspende-se imediatamente a adição de cal, e temos a calda neutra.\r\nEnquanto o papel de tornesol, está vermelho a calda está ácida, e sendo aplicada queimará as folhas; se, pelo contrário, adicionarmos cal em excesso, ficará a calda alcalina, e não atuará sobre fungo enquanto não perder, pela ação das chuvas, o excesso de cal.\r\nA calda deve ser aplicada em finíssima poeira, bem distribuída, caminhando o operador com as costas voltadas ao vento.\r\nA primeira aplicação deve ser feita quando os rebentos atingem 10 ou 15 cm; a segunda, 20 ou 25 dias depois, conforme a estação for mais ou menos seca; pode ser precisa uma terceira em fins de Junho.\r\nTodas as outras caldas e preparados líquidos ou em pó, cujo resultado não seja ainda bem conhecido, devem ser experimentados antes da aplicação em grande, porque podem trazer deceções.»\r\nAs despesas com o tratamento das vinhas são tão importantes, e os preços dos vinhos pouco remuneradores; mas se deixam de fazer-se os tratamentos, pode perder-se a novidade, estragar-se a vinha e portanto maior o prejuízo. Espectáculo tristemente admirável!\r\nUma nuvem imensa, compacta, de quilómetros de comprido, obscureceu o sol, e, num momento, esta cidade apareceu às escuras, em plena tarde de um calor sufocante.\r\nDentro em poucos segundos, numa atrapalhação que não se descreve, tudo veio para a rua … mulheres, homens, crianças, com cacetes e ramos verdes compridos; senhoritas e meninos com latas de petróleo chocalhando nelas numa fúria ensurdecedora; os comerciantes soltando foguetes, rojões e bombas de dinamite; espingardas, revólveres, flobers, tudo, tudo se disparou, tudo veio para a rua num barulho infernal, numa algazarra desesperada, terrível, infamemente inocente…\r\nParecia que se acabava o mundo!\r\nE tudo para quê?\r\nPara espantar e espatifar esses malditos ortópteros, que se riam dos nossos incómodos, zombavam das nossas metralhadoras, não faziam caso da nossa gritaria, e lá vinham eles, como vieram, num zumbido medonho e com uma fome derrancada pousar sobre os nossos quintais, enfiando-se pelas nossas janelas, soprando aos nossos ouvidos, aninharem-se sobre as nossas camas, depois de cobrirem os nossos telhados, de estragarem as nossas frutas dos nossos pomares, e de se agarrarem, como polvos, às lindas flores dos nossos jardins.\r\nAh, por la Madona…!\r\nCá estão eles, pois. Isto faz-se na ocasião em que as estacas tenham de ser enterradas.
