Traz esse jornal uma curiosa notícia das experiências feitas há pouco pelo Dr. Mambriani sobre os males que os grilos causam. Quem tal diria? O grilo, que com o seu cri, cri tanto diverte os rapazes, é um inimigo do lavrador!... Quem diria que, sendo útil o sapo, útil o pardal, útil a doninha, útil o ouriço caixeiro não se possa dizer outro tanto do grilo?!... O Dr. Mambriani verificou que aparecem mais grilos na primavera, quando as estações precedentes tiverem corrido mais secas. Os grilos pequenos aparecem, de ordinário, em Junho; começam a esconder-se nos fins de Setembro e Outubro, para reaparecerem na primavera seguinte, com toda a sua actividade e é então que fazem prejuízos. Os grilos atacam os prados de trevo, as beterrabas enquanto pequenas e os tomates. Para fugir ao ataque dos grilos, em alguns países costumam os lavradores antecipar para Fevereiro e Março a sementeira dos prados, enquanto os grilos estão nas tocas. Também lavram tarde no Outono ou, se a terra é húmida, lavram-na fundo, porque os grilos não gostam também da humidade. O Dr. Mambriani reconhece que o melhor meio para dar cabo dos grilos será passar, uma ou duas vezes, por cima da terra, um rolo de ferro ou pedra, depois das sementeiras (como se faz lá fora, por toda a parte e já se devia fazer em Portugal). Faz-se esse serviço pela fresca. Os grilos ficam assim abafados nas tocas e não aprecem mais. A rolagem ou passagem desse rolo, feita pouco depois de as sementes germinarem, tem ainda a vantagem de que as plantas pequeninas crescem mais rapidamente.
