A luta contra tantos inimigos é na realidade fatigante pelos cuidados que exige e pela vigilância que necessita. É uma guerra aberta, a que nenhum viticultor se pode esquivar, se quiser colher algum resultado do seu laborioso trabalho. […] Entre os inimigos ou parasitas temos a altisa ou pulgão da vinha, um pequeno coleóptero de cor verde-azul metálico, que faz na sua postura na face inferior das folhas da vinha formando placas compostas de uns 30.000 ovos amarelos e elipsoides. […] Os estragos ocasionados pela altisa são consideráveis, porque também ataca os gomos e os pequeninos cachos. A caça à altisa é o único meio que resultados dá para destruir tão daninho inseto.\r\nA cochylis pequena borboleta que devora as flores da videira e lhe corta os bagos, é outro parasita animal. […] A caça é ainda o único meio de que dispõe o homem para destruir este inseto. \r\nComo são borboletas, crepusculares e noturnas, e como se deixam atrair pela luz, a sua destruição não é difícil pelo meio de lanternas. Na Roménia e em França, as lâmpadas de acetilene tem dado excelentes resultados.\r\nA erinose é uma alteração da vinha provocada por um acaridio microscópico cujas picadelas provocam a hipertrofia das células epidérmicas das folhas e determinam intumescências na face superior, guarnecidas interiormente de pelos amarelados que se tornam mais tarde pardacentos. Este acaridio, no seu estado perfeito, tem de comprido quatro decimas parte de um milímetro.\r\nA erinose é fácil de confundir com o míldio: no entanto distingue-se a primeira do segundo, porque provoca a deformação da folha o que não sucede com o míldio. A erinose não é moléstia grave e fácil de combater com enxofrações. \r\nQuanto aos parasitas vegetais, como é sabido, são muito mais numerosos e nocivos, devendo o viticultor combatê-los com o maior cuidado, pois os seus ataques são frequentes e sempre graves. Entre os mais conhecidos e mais de recear apontaremos o oídio, o míldio, o black-rot e o botrytis ciderea.\r\nContra estas moléstias criptogâmicas nunca o viticultor deve deixar de aplicar os tratamentos preventivos, isto é, antes que comecem as suas devastações. Uma vinha invadida pelo míldio se não tiver tido o tratamento preventivo, está irremediavelmente perdida com a respeito da produção.\r\nContra o míldio, o único remédio eficaz é a calda cúprica. A calda que hoje se preconiza como melhor é composta de 2 kilos de sulfato de cobre, 2 kilos de cal viva por 100 litros de água. A aplicação desta calda tem dado excelentes resultados.\r\nContra o oídio temos em primeiro e único lugar o enxofre. Quando as enxofrações são bem executadas, o oídio não resiste deve empregar o enxofre sublimado, flor de enxofre, de fabricação recente.\r\nContra o botrytis ciderea, que provocava podridão moléstia que, muito se tem espalhado, especialmente nas regiões húmidas, aplica-se em França uma calda composta de kilo e meio de sulfato de cobre, kilo e meio de sabão em pó por 100 litros de água. Faz-se o primeiro tratamento quando os gomos têm apenas 20 centímetros.
