Há felizmente um meio de combate de fácil pratica nos pomares pequenos que consiste em pintar troncos e varas com a calda seguinte: 2 quilos de cal extinta em 4 litros de água; sulfato de cobre, 1 quilo, dissolvido a quente em 42 litros de água. Mistura-se depois a cal com o sulfato juntando-lhe a argila necessária para dar à mistura uma certa consistência e meio quilo de fuligem de chaminé. Este preparado afugenta os pássaros completamente e tem a vantagem também de matar uma grande quantidade de insectos que hibernam ocultos sob a casca da árvore, à espera dos primeiros calores para se reanimarem e atacarem a folhagem e a fruta. \r\nMODO SIMPLES DE RECONHECER A PUREZA DO ENXOFRE. - A grande procura que tem a flor do enxofre para curar as vinhas atacadas do oídio, tem dado lugar a fraudes neste género, que se vende muitas vezes misturada com diversos corpos inertes, tais como:— gesso, pó de mármore e de vidro, farinha de tremoço, de milho e de ervilhas, argila, etc. Quando o enxofre é puro, deitado numa colher de ferro, e exposto ao fogo, arde sem deixar resíduo. Bussard e Etienne, do Instituto Agronómico de Paris, fizeram experiências muito interessantes com o fim de averiguar se é conveniente o emprego do calor como agente destruidor dos insetos que invadem as sementes, e se esse emprego é ou não nocivo para estas.\r\nEm primeiro lugar, reconheceram que todos os insetos são destruídos com grande facilidade pela alta temperatura, e o que é mais interessante, a eficácia do tratamento realiza-se em espaços de tempo relativamente curtos e com temperatura mais baixa do que era possível supor. Com efeito 50 a 60 grais centígrados e dois a cinco minutos são suficientes para destruir a maior parte dos insetos.\r\nPelos trabalhos dos experimentadores franceses, chegou-se também a descobrir que as sementes possuem uma resistência surpreendente ao calor seco, o que ainda não tinha sido assinalado.\r\nOs cereais, com exceção do milho, podem suportar uma temperatura de 100º durante uma hora, sem que a sua faculdade germinativa sofra cousa alguma.\r\nOs snrs. Sem bem penetrar a causa e natureza do mal, a esmo e sem fundamento se aplicam vãs medicinas.\r\nOra é um facto não menos verdadeiro do que lamentável, que a maioria dos hortelões e jardineiros ignoram absolutamente a economia e até o nome dos insetos que todos os dias veem, e cujas depredações quotidianamente sofrem. A esta ignorância se deve também o malogro de muitos remédios, e preventivos. Muitos que na verdade eram excelentes, se tornaram ineficazes ou prejudiciais, e ficarem tidos em conta de inúteis, por serem aplicados extemporaneamente. […] \r\nO hortelão pois ou o lavrador que principia a sua vida, e pretende nela primar, deve dedicar algumas horas das do descanso a aprender e estudar as formas gerais do insetos; as mudanças porque passam; e as primárias divisões em que pelos modernos naturalistas foram repartidos.
